John Boyle; GOAL CEO, John O’Shea; and GOAL’s
Maura Lennon launch this year’s Ballintubber Walk

The chairman of the Ballintubber GOAL Walk committee, John Boyle, has expressed his delight at news that the 2011 Ballintubber Walk has raised almost €30,000 to support GOAL’s programmes for those suffering from the drought crisis in the Horn of Africa.

More than 300 people took part in the annual St. Stephen’s Day event, walking the usual distance of 10km around the town of Ballintubber.

“It is a huge tribute to the people of Ballintubber, Ballymoe and the surrounding areas that in these difficult economic times, they have so generously supported GOAL’s work in helping those less fortunate in the Horn of Africa,” said John.

John and the organising committee would like to thank all those who supported the walk, including Benny O'Connell; the Gárda Siochána; Paschal Fitzmaurice; Co. Roscommon Civil Defence; Castlerea Brass and Reed Band; James Kenny; Mayor of Roscommon, Eugene Murphy; the Ballintubber GOAL Walk committee including drivers Patsy McCaul, Liam Devaney and Martin Breheny, and also Gerry Ryan, Tom Goodwin, Imelda Devaney, Martin Keane, Martin Conboy, Noeleen Dowling, Margaret Dockery, Carmel Shanagher, Mary Keegan, Celia King, Martin Casey and Basil Finan.

“We would also like to thanks local media outlets, Shannonside, Mid-West Radio, the Roscommon Herald and the Roscommon People, and of course our participants, sponsors and all those who donated spot prizes or helped in any way,” added John.

Anyone who has yet to return their sponsorship card should post them, along with any sponsorship monies collected, to John Boyle, voluntary GOAL Fundraiser, 6 Dun Daingean, Newcastle, Galway.

More on the Walk...

Every St Stephen’s Day since 1996, people of all ages from Ballintubber, Co. Roscommon, and the surrounding districts, have taken part in the 10 kilometre sponsored walk in aid of GOAL.

The only break with tradition came in the last two years, when the event had to be postponed for a number of weeks because of particularly bad weather conditions.

Since its inception, the Ballintubber Walk has generated well in excess of €400,000 for GOAL projects throughout the developing world.

If you would like to take part in the Ballintubber Walk, or maybe just want to sponsor someone or make a donation, please contact organiser John Boyle at 087-6388116, or a member of the Ballintubber GOAL Walk Committee.

Since 1977, GOAL has spent in excess of €720 million delivering aid to some of the most vulnerable people in the developing world. We have achieved all this on an exceptionally low administration cost base.
