Disaster Preparedness and Mitigation
The UNDP global report on Disaster Risk Reduction identified Honduras as one of the most vulnerable countries in the world to natural disasters and highlighted the risk of disasters as a primary obstacle to the sustainable development of the country.
The Global Climate Risk Index assessment completed in 2009 ranked Honduras as the country most affected by weather-related events in the world in the decade from 1997 to 2007.
Since 2005, GOAL has been involved in community-based disaster mitigation and preparedness in the remote regions of Yoro and Gracias A Dios as well as the urban area of Tegucigalpa.
The GOAL programme includes the rehabilitation of strategic infrastructure and the development of emergency shelters, the installation of an early-warning system, the raising of public awareness, informal education, local capacity building and training, and the stockpiling of emergency relief supplies.
Training and equipping communities to respond quickly and effectively to disasters is a key objective of the programme. As part of this programme GOAL focuses on the inclusion of people with disabilities.
