Since then, we have worked in 53 different countries worldwide, providing essential life-saving services to the poor and to the victims of many of the world’s major disasters over the ensuing period.
Our interventions in 2011 included:
Horn of Africa crisis:
GOAL responded to the drought crisis in the Horn of Africa throughout 2011, providing assistance to Somali refugees in camps located both in Kenya and Ethiopia. In addition, we also provided assistance to drought-affected local populations in both of these countries.
- Our work in Ethiopia included:
- Nutritional therapy to over 33,500 malnourished children in Ethiopia.
- Tankering of 47 million litres of clean water to over 500,000 Ethiopians in drought-affected regions of the country.
- Distribution of 90 metric tons of food aid to Somali refugees.
- Distribution of emergency shelter materials and essential items to over 30,000 refugees.
- Our work in Kenya included:
- Distribution of hygiene kits and essential items to 10,000 individuals in the Dadaab refugee camps.
- The beginning of a programme to provide shelter for 10,000 families and latrines for 10,000 individuals in the Dadaab refugee camps.
Haiti Earthquake emergency response programme:
GOAL completed its €12m US Government-funded Haiti earthquake response programme, on time and as planned.
Thanks to this funding, GOAL was able to provide:
- 2,000 transitional shelters for 2,000 households left homeless (approximately 10,000 people) in Port-au-Prince and neighbouring Gressier.
- Cash-for-work opportunities for 5,000 beneficiaries engaging in rubble clearance and solid waste removal.
- Construction of over 800 latrines and 200 wash-blocks to be used by earthquake-affected communities.
- Construction of 10 child-friendly structures to be used as temporary schools and community centres.
Kenya Housing:

In 2011, GOAL signed its latest contract with the African Development Bank for €1.1 million to construct an additional 2,000 low-cost houses in the Nakuru region of Kenya.
This is the latest phase of houses that GOAL will construct in Kenya, having previously built over 8,000 units.
The recipients are Kenyan families left homeless after the post-election violence of 2007.
This conflict resulted in the destruction of 50,000 homes and the displacement of 250,000 people.
Pakistan Flood Response Programme:
GOAL closed out its emergency response programme for the victims of the devastating 2010 floods in the Sindh province of Pakistan. Whilst in-country, we managed to:
- Distribute emergency shelter materials and essential household items to over 15,000 families.
- Distribute 75 metric tons of food.
- Provide therapeutic nutritional assistance to over 5,000 beneficiaries, including 2,500 malnourished children.
- Install 1,200 emergency latrines and facilitate clean water provision for over 3,000 households.
India schools Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) programme:
GOAL continued its provision of adequate water and sanitation facilities in schools across the slums of Kolkata, India. In 2011, we provided toilets, bathing facilities and clean water in 25 schools, providing sanitary learning environments for approximately 7,500 children and their teachers.
This brings the number of schools assisted in this programme to over 500 since its inception in 2005, with a total school-children population of approximately 300,000.
Post-independence violence, South Sudan:
By taking advantage of its long-term presence in Sudan, GOAL was able to respond to the population displacement of tens of thousands of people caused by the violence related to South Sudan’s newly-gained independence. This flared up in the Abyei region over the period of referendum followed by independence and more recently in Blue Nile state.
On both occasions, GOAL was able to provide emergency healthcare, and distribute emergency shelter materials and essential items to tens of thousands of displaced Sudanese.
