Almost two years on from the earthquake that killed hundreds of thousands of people in Haiti and displaced more than 1.3 million from their homes, GOAL is continuing to deliver aid to the survivors.
In the months following the disaster, GOAL fed almost 500,000 people and provided financial support to over 10,000 households by employing locals in cash-for-work programmes.
We have since built 2,000 transitional shelters, for 10,000 of the homeless, and constructed hundreds of latrines and wash-cubicles, as part of our water, sanitation and hygiene programme.Despite the progress, many Haitian people still need our help, including 600,000 - almost twice the population of Cork city and its surrounds - living in tents across the city of Port-au-Prince and other earthquake areas.
Next month, from January 21st to 28th, GOAL will take part in Haiti Week, an initiative launched recently in Dublin by former US President Bill Clinton, to raise awareness of the problems that Haiti continues to face.
Conceived by a number of Irish charities and businesses, Haiti Week will showcase a series of events and activities throughout the country. The aim is to bring together members of the public and the business community to help foster new ideas and approaches that will benefit of the Haitian people.
