Hatty Barthorp (née Newhouse), from Bristol in England, is GOAL’s roving nutritionist. This is an extremely responsible position which entails her travelling to GOAL locations in the field and designing or advising on, and often initially managing, the food and nutrition programmes most suitable for specific situations.
Hatty is exceedingly well qualified for her job, both academically and in terms of hands-on, developing-world experience. She completed a Masters Degree in Public Health Nutrition at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, previously having gained a Degree with Honours in Medical Sciences with Psychology, at Southampton University. She also has qualifications in communications, advertising and marketing, as well as in arts and design.
Hatty’s professional experience ranges across many countries. She worked in Cambodia, Burundi, Congo, Mali, and Darfur before joining GOAL, and has worked as a GOALie in Ethiopia, Niger, Sudan, Malawi, Zimbabwe, DR Congo, Sierra Leone, Uganda, Pakistan and Kenya.
Sunny, animated and very personable, Hatty is extremely popular with colleagues and clients alike. She is the type of person who makes the most of every day, and every situation, and consequently raises the spirits of those around her. She is also self-assured and utterly professional, approaching every challenge with uncompromising integrity.
In a working environment, she is very motivated and, when necessary, an assertive person, who is highly organised and disciplined, and more than capable of acting on initiative.
A committed team player and leader, Hatty works best in a dynamic and fluid environment, facing varied and new tasks with an enthusiastic involvement that rubs off on her colleagues.
