Housing Support
IN 2004, GOAL launched an innovative community-based housing programme in Uganda, where we build new two- and four-roomed houses and rehabilitate others for orphans and vulnerable families affected by HIV and Aids.
All building materials are, of course, sourced in Uganda, and local people are employed at every phase of the construction process.
Incorporated within the programme is training in house construction for the local employees to ensure the long term sustainability of local house provision.
The new dwellings are solid, brick-built structures to give shelter against the elements. Each is complete with its own water and sanitation facilities.
Just prior to occupancy, we equip them with stoves, mattresses and blankets. We also supply cooking utensils, and mosquito nets for protection against malaria infection.
The programme was launched in Masaka in the south of the country and has since moved to Bugiri, a town in south-eastern Uganda. Since it was launched, more than 1,050 homes have been built or renovated, each with an average occupancy of 5-6 persons.
