A native of Dublin, Maura is married with four young children and now lives in Galway. She currently heads up GOAL in the West of Ireland and works between there and the head office in Dun Laoghaire, Co Dublin.
Maura remembers her introduction to humanitarian work as something of a baptism of fire.
“When I finished training as a nurse I wanted to work with the missions, but ended up on a plane flying out to Ethiopia with GOAL during the famine of 1984. I wanted to save lives but had no idea of the realities behind the idealism.”

During her 27 years with GOAL, selfless dedication to humanitarianism has had Maura working in Ethiopia, Sudan, Cambodia, Mozambique, Rwanda, Tanzania, Angola, and Honduras.
Maura has also travelled extensively to locations around the developing world, both as a member of GOAL’s emergencyinterventions team and to evaluate and assess GOAL programmes.
In 2012, Maura made an emotional return trip to Ethiopia, 27 years after she began her career there with GOAL. Please click here to read more about her visit, and to read about Marima, just one of the women Maura met on her trip who has been helped by GOAL.
