Statement: DFA to allocate €200,000 to GOAL for emergency programme in Maban region of Southern Sudan
23 December 2011
The Department of Foreign Affairs today confirmed that it will allocate €200,000 to GOAL, for its emergency programme in the Maban region of Southern Sudan.GOAL is addressing the humanitarian needs of a growing displaced population in Maban, where refugee numbers are expected to reach 100,000 over the coming weeks.
Intense conflict in Blue Nile State, which has caused this most recent crisis, has potential to destabilise the fragile peace between the north and the South.
GOAL’s main intervention will centre on health, as the physical condition of the displaced people has rapidly declined over the last number of days.
GOAL also expects to get substantial funding from the European Union for its programmes in Maban.
The agency has worked with the poorest of the poor in South Sudan since 1986, and is currently responsible for the healthcare needs of some 200,000 people.
GOAL’s Chairman, Pat O’Mahony, commented, “We are delighted that the DFA has responded so positively to our call for assistance.”
