About the St Patrick's Day Badges...
In 1990, a group of enterprising students from Blackrock College, in south County Dublin, dreamt up the idea of selling adhesive Shamrock badges, made up of woven fabric, on St Patrick’s Day in support of GOAL and Aidlink.
So popular did the initiative prove that their St Patrick’s Day Shamrock-badge sale became an annual event. In the intervening two decades, over €2 million has been raised in this way to help the poorest of the poor in the developing world.
Praising the students for their continued efforts, GOAL Chief Executive, John O’ Shea has said: “The sale of St Patrick’s Day badges was a wonderful idea. It allows people to show their pride in being Irish whilst supporting the developing world. I firmly believe that a caring attitude and social conscience developed early will remain with a person throughout their life”.
If you’re offered a GOAL Shamrock badge on St Patrick’s Day, be sure to buy one, and help GOAL in its fight against poverty and deprivation in the developing world. Or better still, buy a few as gifts for your friends and family.
