GOAL: Wills and Legacies

GOAL works towards ensuring that the poorest and most vulnerable in our world and those affected by humanitarian crises, have access to the fundamental needs and rights of life, including, but not limited to, food, water, shelter, medical attention and education. It is non-denominational, non-governmental and non-political.

All contributions are critical in maintaining this level of activity. Every cent is vital to GOAL as they supply the seed capital that allows us gain access to much larger sums from institutional donors such as the United Nations, various governments and the EU.

Making a will is a once-off opportunity to leave a lasting impact after you depart this world. Leaving a gift to GOAL is one way to ensure some of the lives of the world’s most vulnerable improve because of your generosity.

Types of legacies

There are four ways in which you can make a bequest to GOAL’s programmes:

1.    As a gift of a specific amount of money – known as a pecuniary.

2.    As a gift of a specific item – known as a legacy.

3.    As a gift of the rest of your assets that you have not already given away – known as a residuary bequest.

4.    If you have already made a will and you wish to give a gift to GOAL, you will need to prepare a new will, or ask your solicitor to add a codicil (addition) in a similar way to the original will, which should be kept in the same place as the original will.

How to make a will

To help with the process, please refer to the following:

-    Talk to your solicitor (preferably use one recommended to you by a friend)

-    List your assets and their approximate value

-    List your liabilities (incl. mortgage(s), loans, credit cards).

-    Nominate executors – someone who you would like to look after your affairs

-    Consider how you would like your assets divided.

-    Your solicitor can help you prepare your will from this point on, covering tax implications, of giving to various family and friends.

-    Consider including a gift to GOAL.

Since 1977, GOAL has spent in excess of €720 million delivering aid to some of the most vulnerable people in the developing world. We have achieved all this on an exceptionally low administration cost base.
