GOAL 2009 Milestones
• GOAL expanded its emergency response efforts in Ethiopia
in the wake of an appeal for food aid for 6.2 million people.
• Following earthquakes in Indonesia,
GOAL distributed food, water and non-food items to approximately
1,500 people.
• GOAL provided clean water, shelter,
hygiene materials and food supplies for upwards of 22,500 people
in the Sunderbans of West Bengal after the destruction caused by
Cyclone Aila.
• Post-election violence saw GOAL distributing
700 shelter kits to 1,200 families in Kenya.
• Over 21,000 children in Kolkata,
India were direct beneficiaries of GOAL’s continued provision
of safe drinking water, improved sanitation and appropriate hand-washing
facilities.
• GOAL helped 12,000 people living
in the slums of Freetown, Sierra Leone, by providing access to potable
water and sanitation facilities, and giving training in improved
hygiene practices.
• In November, GOAL completed building
its 1,000th new house in southern Uganda for vulnerable families
who have been affected by HIV and/or AIDS. GOAL also trained hundreds
of local young people in house construction and maintenance techniques.
• GOAL ran emergency feeding programmes
in Zimbabwe, and helped 6,600 people improve food security and food
production by training them in new farming, food processing and
food preservation methods.
• Thousands of vulnerable women and
children in North and South Sudan have continued to benefit from
primary healthcare services provided by GOAL.
