COUNTRY PROFILE

Sudan, with a population of 42.5 million people, is the largest and one of the most environmentally diverse countries in Africa.

Life expectancy is 56 years for men and 60 years for women, and the rate of infant mortality is 65 per 1, 000 live births.

GNI per capita is US $1, 130.

In 2005, a comprehensive peace agreement brought an official end to Africa’s longest running conflict (a 22-year civil war between the mainly Muslim north and the Animist and Christian south).
However, fierce fighting broke out and continues in the western region of Darfur.

There remains a distinct lack of security for the people of South Sudan, with severe weaknesses in general infrastructure and in the institutions of governance. The region also has one of the least developed healthcare systems in the world.
Access to basic water and sanitation facilities is very limited, and child and maternal mortality rates are extremely high compared to national averages.

North Sudan, in common with the rest of the country, has been ravaged by the decades-long conflict that caused tremendous loss of life, devastated the country’s infrastructure, and destroyed livelihoods.

The Darfur region of Sudan continues to suffer from civil war.
GOAL has been implementing humanitarian programmes in the Kutum province there since the start of the conflict in February 2004.

GOAL has been delivering multi-faceted health, water, sanitation, general aid and development programmes in Sudan since 1985.
