COUNTRY PROFILE
The Zimbabwean economy is in a state
of prolonged crisis. Out of a population of 13 million people,
56 per cent lives on less than US $1 a day. GNI per capita
stands at US$340.
The country is experiencing one of the world’s worst
HIV epidemics. At least 3,200 people die each week from Aids
(UN 2005), and the disease accounts for some 75 per cent of
all hospital admissions.
Life expectancy at birth for women and men is 42.7 and 44.1
years respectively, and the infant mortality rate is 58 per
1, 000 live births

There are an estimated 1.3 million orphans
in Zimbabwe, and 1.8 million people are living with HIV and AIDS.
