Young people from all around
Ireland came together to raise funds for GOAL’s programmes
in the developing world on Friday, 25th and Saturday 26th of June
at another hugely succesful Galway World Cup Fun Weekend.
Staff at the Health Service Executive (HSE), Child and Family Research
Centre NUIG, the Gardaí & Justice Programmes, and Foróige
organised their very own summer soccer event that rivalled the tournament
taking place in South Africa.
This year, a total of 32 teams, made
up of boys and girls aged between 14 and 16 and representing different
nations from all around the world, descended upon the sports centre
in Drom, Galway, for their very own World Cup.
The popular event promotes self-esteem, teamwork, friendship, social,
personal and educational skills, sportsmanship and aims to bring
young people together, focus on global inter-cultural awareness
and - with all funds going towards GOAL's work in the developing
world - it presents young people with an opportunity to show their
solidarity with those living in much more difficult circumstances.
Over the last six years the teenagers involved in this event have
raised close to €40,000 for the GOAL street children’s
project in Kenya, which is protecting and saving thousands of children
living in the slum areas of Nairobi, while the money has also helped
various other GOAL funded programmes.
The Galway World Cup Fun Weekend could not take place without the
continued support of the Health Service Executive (HSE), Foróige,
Child and Family Research Centre NUIG, Galway City VEC, Bank of
Ireland, Galway Gardaí, the Irish Justice Service, the Football
Association of Ireland (FAI) and Galway City Partnership who have
helped fund the programme for the last 11 years.
