The Kerryman, 28th November 2007
THE annual Duffs Christmas Day swim has been going strong since 1974 and, this year, locals are set to break all records, as 2006 saw EUR12,000 raised for charity. Established by the late Frank O'Leary, the sponsored Christmas Day swim has become a part of Christmas in Cahersiveen, with over 100 brave souls baring their elements in the crisp and bracing waters at Cuascrome Strand.
"It's a real social event and many people who are home for Christmas also take part," said Gerry Enright, a keen swimmer who likes to swim in the sea close to his home every day. "St Mary's steward the event and there is great local involvement."
This year Valentia Lifeboat, St. Vincent de Paul, Valentia Hospital, IHCPT, Iveragh Mental Hospital, Angela Kean Peru Fund, Kerry Diabetics, Croi Uibhrigh, Hospice,
O'Connell Memorial Church, Sr Kathleen Quinlan, Pakistan, Tractor for Tanzania, Chinteka Children's Support Africa, Kerry Society for Autism, Tig an Oilean, GOAL and Siveen Care will benefit.
Newcomers as well as veterans are welcome and sponsorship cards are available from Junior Murphy. |
