Over six months on from the disaster, GOAL has completed a $9 million food distribution arrangement with the World Food Programme of the United Nations, with almost 500,000 people receiving food rations. Recently, we agreed an $11 million contract with the US Government, the main elements of which are cash-for-work and shelter, water and sanitation projects. To accommodate some of the 1.3 million people displaced from their homes, GOAL has distributed materials for 2,000 emergency shelters and is planning to build 2,500 transitional shelters. Under our cash-for-work programme, GOAL is supporting the clearance of rubble, solid waste removal, excavation and construction of latrines and bathing cubicles. A total of 800 latrines and 800 wash-blocks are to be constructed under this programme. We are building 15 roofed structures for use by locals for community activities and by specialist agencies for education, psycho-social and various other support projects. We also plan to build temporary schools. As part of our hygiene promotion activities GOAL has distributed in excess of 1,600 hygiene kits and we are aiming to distribute close to 8,000 kits as part of this campaign. Now, the arrival of the hurricane season is bringing a new challenge to survivors and aid agencies in Haiti. Those who wish to support our aid programmes there - and help some of those most in need - can make a donation to GOAL by clicking here, contacting GOAL at PO Box 19, Dun Laoghaire, or by telephoning 01-2809 779.
