Newsflash, 24th October 2005
A team of 12 GOALies are distributing shelter materials, including winterised tents and blankets, and other essential emergency supplies in the devastated town of Bagh and surrounding villages high in the Kashmir mountains.

GOAL is one of the only NGOs working in this part of quake-affected Pakistan and has so far transported dozens of truckloads of materials to isolated mountain areas. We are distributing these supplies to 25,000 of the most vulnerable families who have survived this earthquake. GOAL will also distribute food to approximately 66,000 beneficiaries.

Ray Jordon, GOAL's Emergency Coordinator, says "The greatest needs of the people are food supplies for the coming two months until the situation stabilises, as well as appropriate shelter for the oncoming winter snows."

The October 8th earthquake is now known to have killed at least 53,000 people, with the figure climbing higher every day. Over 75,000 others were injured. It is now feared that the fast-approaching winter weather will bring about a second wave of deaths.
