GOAL responding in
Pakistan

GOAL's Emergency Coordinator,
Brian Casey, speaks with some of the victims of the floods
in Sindh Province, Pakistan, where GOAL is helping to deliver
aid
Some of our
work in Pakistan to date:
• Working with local organisation
Pakistani Fisherfolk Forum (PFF), GOAL has supported the emergency
evacuation of 30,000 people in Thatta District in southern
Sindh.
• GOAL is working with Sindh
Rural Support Organisation (SRSO) to distribute food to 37,000
people daily. SRSO are also using GOAL funds to provide fodder
and vaccinations to livestock to keep this limited resource
alive.
• GOAL has supported the distribution
of non-food items such as plastic sheeting for shelter, hygiene
kits and cooking utensils to 7,000 affected people in the
Kashmore and Larkana districts in the north of Sindh province
through local organisations, Health And Nutrition Development
Society (HANDS) and SRSO.
• GOAL is transporting 52 Irish
Aid collapsible water bladders (27 of 5,000 litre capacity
and 25 of 10,000 litre capacity) which will provide support
to camps and health facilities, and play a key role in diarrhoea
prevention by ensuring a managed supply of clean water.
• Along with an earlier consignment
of 500,000, a new consignment of 10 million water purification
tablets will be distributed and will provide safe drinking
water for more than 55,000 families for a period of three
months.
• To further combat outbreaks
of water-borne diseases and basic health issues, healthcare
kits supplied by GOAL will help provide treatment to 20,000
patients over a three-month period.
• GOAL is training a cholera
prevention team in Sukkur and will cooperate with other agencies
to guard against any potential cholera outbreak.
• GOAL has procured 6,700 NFI
kits, which will be distributed to 6,700 families in Sindh
province in the coming days and weeks. These contain such
items as plastic sheeting for shelter, sleeping mats, soap,
cooking utensils, cutlery and other essential items.
• Three thousand temporary household
shelters are being distributed to 3,000 families in Shahdad
Kot, Shirkarpur, Sukkur, Khaurpur and Kashmore (1,000) in
the coming days.

GOAL ramps up aid
efforts in Niger

GOAL's Country Director
in Niger, Arjan Ottens, at a
GOAL-supported therapeutic feeding centre to treat
those suffering from severe malnutrition
GOAL has expanded its emergency relief
efforts in Niger, which is facing into a food and nutritional
crisis that has already left three million people on the verge
of starvation.
We are now supporting more than 20,000 of the most vulnerable
people living in the worst affected areas by providing them
with unconditional cash contributions to help them combat
the effects of the poor harvest and avoid selling off their
livestock in an effort to survive the current lean season.
We are also supporting walk-in therapeutic and supplementary
feeding centres to treat severe and moderate malnutrition
in the Mirriah department, Zinder region, in the south of
the country.
GOAL is
supporting the expansion of a 90-bed in-patient therapeutic
feeding centre to 120 beds at Mirriah Departmental Hospital,
and is providing vital equipment to help increase capacity.

Nando di Carlofelice
It is
with deepest regret and profound sadness that we learned
on Friday morning, July 23rd, of the passing of our dear
colleague, Nando di Carlofelice.
Nando had been working with GOAL since October 2007, as
Financial Controller in Uganda and Malawi. In March of
this year, Nando became ill and travelled to South Africa
to receive treatment.
Sadly, he lost his battle against illness and passed away
on Thursday, July 22nd. |
 |
Nando became more than
a colleague to many of us during his time with GOAL. He became
a good and much-valued friend.
As a person, he was gentle, modest,
and generous, and instantly likeable. Nando will be sadly
missed by everyone who knew him.
We extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends, loved
ones and all who worked and became friends with Nando over
the past three years in GOAL.
GOAL builds
1,000 houses
for poor in Uganda

Paul
Kimbugwe gets a hug from older brother Richard outside their
new GOAL house in Masaka, Southern Uganda. Both of the boys’
parents succumbed to AIDS and they had been living in the
hut in the background. Their new home provides shelter, warmth,
water and sanitation facilities.
